What is Static Charge?
Static charge or static electricity is an invisible form of energy which causes problems in panel beating shops and work stations where electric charges on surfaces occur. It normally occurs when materials are rubbed against each other i.e. abrasives, or during paint preparation when wiping off panels prior to painting. It causes a charging process where a spark can occur or can be felt if you bring your arm close to a charged panel and you can feel the charge attracting hair on your body.

Why is it a problem?
Static charge is a great contributor of paint contamination and orientation of metallic flakes in metallic colours. Even the best painters in the cleanest booths cannot get away from the problems that static electricity causes

Where does it come from?
Various daily processes in the panel shop can cause static charges to occur, including flatting, air blow off, and preparation with paint degreasers prior to topcoat. The final preparation prior to painting is one of the biggest producers of static electricity. All these processes incorporate contact and rubbing of the panels to be painted. Even the painting process can cause static build up on a panel.

How can we eliminate Static?
The processes in the workshop, paint prep and spray booth can cause static build up on the panels to be painted. This static charge moves around a panel and it is therefore necessary to de ionize the entire panel prior to paint application, both on top and around the edges. Seeing that static electricity is invisible, it may seem that you are only spraying the panel off with air, but in reality you are covering the panel with an invisible layer of positive and negative ions which in turn quickly neutralizes the static charge.
